Came across these at Top of the World in Ottawa. My new favourite helmet. Really good padding, good sizes and the ‘Oh So Important’ peak to keep the rain/sun out.

Sandbox Helmets

Sandbox Brain Buckets come in loads of rad colours, my favourites being the green and purple. They also have 2 levels of protection; the Classic that comes with thin and soft EVA liner for that ultra comfortable, low profile fit and the Certified comes with a CE Snow Sports certified EPS liner. All the Sandbox helmets come with 3 sets of fit pads, removable ear covers and removable goggle clip.

So, if you have anything to do with distance skating you probably know that Holey’s have been the truck of choice for distance skaters the world over. They have been used on journeys across the UK, Scotland, Europe, New Zealand, Australia as well as Rob’s world record skate across Europe, the US and China.

The reasons are simple. They are built tough, (mine have done thousands of miles on and are still going strong) the hangar design means they can be lowered more than the competitors and the bushings and angle mean they can be super-carvey but stll handle speeds up to 40 with ease. Perfect huh?

I thought so. Till the sabres arrived.

Sabres are a UK designed truck from the stables of lush longboards. They are a competitively priced downhill truck offering a stable 45 degree angle and 190mm width. Now I was a little sceptical about these for distance, would the width be an issue? Would the 45 degrees make them super unresponsive? and most importantly how low could they go?

The answer to all these questions is pretty much answered by the simple fact they haven’t left my demonseed since I got them a month ago. I also have the spherical bearing versions from octane sporton my speedboard (going to review these later when I’ve sorted the bushings out) The finish is flawless, the baseplate is sleeker and simpler than the holey and the hangar lets you drop the truck as low (if not lower) than the holey.

Sabre Hangars

The only thing that really remains is how they hold up over time. There is a really good discussion about Sabre trucks over on the Skatefurther forum in the equipment thread. Is it worth shelling out for some? If it’s to replace Holeys, probably not. But if you like a bit of speed and want a truck that can be lowered for a pusher and take high speeds, then they may well be the truck for you.

Yet another journey! I found out about this one from Boardfree. A guy is skating across Europe from France to Croatia. The website is all written in French so it isn’t much use to me. What is of some use to me however were the pictures. And these caught my attention. Just look at this deck!

I’ve been in email contact with Gael from Blackkross Longboards and I’m really interested in this. For me it has all the attributes of a demonseed, but it is easier to transport. Here’s what Gael had to say about the A+

Well this board is called the A+ and it is a carbon fiber, birch wood and fiberglass sandwich with fiber glass and carbon brackets..
The brackets give the board some flex then we have a stiffer version of the brackets… we are also working on a cheaper version of the board made with aluminum brackets…
We still are looking for some special screws so that they don’t stick out from the top… found some in the US but can’t get in touch with them so that they send them to France…
People who have been using the board absolutely love it!!!
at the moment the deck only with the composite brackets goes for 219€ wood finish on top, 229€ with a “Mad deco”(ex: hawaiian…) and 249€ for the full carbon version (see attached pics) and it is so low that it really needs to be mounted with 80mm wheels minimum… we’ve tried it with BRD 102mm wheels and it’s amazing!!!! very light for a dropped deck…
There will also soon be a second size deck a bit smaller using the same brackets…

There is a forum thread over on skatefurther about this board too. Now, I’m not into the other Blackkross boards on their site but this board ticks all the boxes for me. Maybe a trip to Paris is in order!

Bumped into the guys at Dangerous Decks when I was at Hog Hill. They had brought their first attempt at a pushing deck along for people to see/skate.

First impressions were very good, the finish is amazing and the bottom layer has a beautifully smooth varnish (I’m told its five layers of varnish applied using a proffesional spray booth) The deck itself reminds me of the new rollsrolls woodie, but a tweaked version. It is a touch wider and the ‘mudguards’ are less in your face. It has a nice sized foot space and feels lovely underneath. My only gripe (and it does only seem to be me!) the drop at the front is too long/mellow. But they had a look at the Demonseeed and are up for attempting such a steep drop.

Not bad huh? It rides really well and seems capably of taking speed. A lovely addition to the distance boards  that are available. They are really upping their involvement in board making, attending all sorts of events and really into it. Will be keeping an eye on DD and seeing what they come up with in the future.
